Answer the 4 Questions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Answer the 4 Questions - Essay Example The best part about the company was also that it had good electrical engineers that paid attention to providing the customers with good quality finished products. However, most of the machines were a little non-user friendly which led to a lot of complaints faced by the dealers. These factors thus represent vital strategic resources for the company in their own ways as mentioned. Answer 2: In the projector market, Sony had secured for itself a firm foothold as well. Sony was the main player in the projector market and had an estimation of about 50% of its units being sold. The main reason by which it was able to generate high levels of revenue was because it had a worldwide network of captive commercial video distributors who in turn worked with about 1,500 dealers worldwide. It had built a reputation for itself in terms of high reliability and cheaper prices with the dealers and that is why the more preferred brand in terms of projector purchases. However, when one looked at its ele ctrical engineers, the ones from Barco were better equipped to handle machines and produced better projectors. Thus the only strategic resource that Sony has in the projector market reverts back to its strong distribution system or line of promotion and physical networking. Answer 3: Barco made a decision of entering a new activity only if it had in depth research of the technology that was required and only if it could hold an estimation of being one of the top three manufacturers of the product in the world. It also put in about 8% - 10% of its annual turnover into research and development for the same. This led to the company facing a vast number of hindrances because due to this, the company only relied on the knowledge that it had gained, and Sony took over the market slowly with the introduction of new and improved technology at lower prices. Had the company changed its vision about not delving into unknown surroundings, it could have done better and provided fierce competitio n for its competitors as well. Answer 4: Sony’s strategic plan was to launch the Superdata projector at the Siggraph show in Boston. This product seized the first place as the industry’s highest performing projector from BPS’ BG400. Sony also planned to price it at a level that was about 20% – 40% below the actual market price that had been established in the projector sector. Thus this lethal combination of having such a low price for a high end and high performance yielding product proved great competition for Barco and threatened not only to lead to a collapse of its traditional market segmentation but also drop the prices of its products to a very low amount. This led to a downturn in the company’s working and functioning. Works Cited 1. Moriarty, Rowland T. â€Å"Barco Projection Systems (A): Worldwide Niche Marketing†

Why People Tell Lies Essay Example for Free

Why People Tell Lies Essay Telling a lie is something that seems to come naturally to people. It is usually a tall story used to hide their shortcomings as individuals or hide actual events that may prove to be detrimental to certain situations a person is involved in. When a person lies because of those reasons, he hopes that the person he is telling it to will believe it and forget the situation that currently exists. The reason people lie vary in reason and depends upon the age of the liar. As children, a lie is sometimes part of an over active imagination. As adults, the lies are told to make their lives seem more interesting than it usually is. Or, among friends, a lie is told to protect feelings or secrets. A lie told by a friend to cover up another friend usually builds the â€Å"I got your back† basis of the friendship. Lies told for any reason is unacceptable. There is no such thing a small lie or a white lie. A lie is a lie and it has severe repercussions once it is discovered. Sometimes, a person becomes a congenital liar because he is afraid that people will not like the real him. So he makes up a totally different personality to make him more popular with people. Unfortunately, once the lie is caught, that usually means the end of that relationship. It is said that a person who says he never lies is a liar himself. I would tend to believe that because some people do not even realize they are lying to people anymore. The people around us who are supposed to be our role models, the celebrities, the politicians, even our own parents, lie at certain points during their lives for one reason or another. So how can they expect us to tell the truth all the time when they themselves cannot be bound to it? Lies are also told in order to assert authority. Leadership by fear it is called. An empty threat that nobody is serious about following through on. Basically, people lie simply because it is easier to deal with a lie and tell people what they want to hear instead of telling a truth that would have to be justified in the end. Why People Tell Lies (Final Version) Some people believe that lying is an act that comes naturally to everyone. The reasons for telling a lie is as varied as the imagination of the people telling lies. The recognized reason that people tell lies is because they need to hide certain information or actions that could have a negative after effect on the liar and the people around him once the truth gets out. It is a way of diverting attention from what really transpired in the hopes that the people concerned will no longer be interested in finding out more details about the events as it actually happened. The fact is that people of all ages, race, and ethnicity lie. Children tell lies as part of their cognitive development processes. A lie is an acceptable product of an over active imagination that the child releases through story telling. Adults on the other hand lie for completely different reasons that are deemed unacceptable by proper society. An adult can lie in order to make himself more interesting as a person or to get ahead in the workplace. When among friends, lies are told to protect feelings, or keep secrets of others in order to reinforce the â€Å"trust† factor between friends. In truth, lies, regardless of the reason they are told, are unacceptable in any society. There is no such thing as a harmless, small, or even white lie. There are no innocent lies because once a lie is told, it immediately poses severe repercussions for the liar who will always be discovered n the end. When a person takes to lying in order become a popular and accepted person in social circles and is caught, the lie effectively ends any relationship that existed and creates an irreparable rift among those concerned. I believe that a person who says that he never lies is a liar himself. The images of people who we trusted to tell the truth and yet lie all the time surround us. From the politicians to the Hollywood celebrities we admire, they all seem to lie to the public on a daily basis and expect us to believe everything they say. They make telling a lie a proper and acceptable thing to do in society. How can we be expected to tell the truth to the people around us when we are surrounded daily by liars? Obviously, one of the major reasons that a person tells a lie, as evidenced by the politicians and celebrities is to assert their authority and influence on the impressionable people. When a lie is told, a wrong magically becomes a right. Even our own parents lie during certain instances and they should therefore never hold their kids to telling them the whole truth all the time. Basically, it is easier to tell a lie and deal with covering it up with more lies than it is to tell a truth with justifiable reasons. People seem to accept and deal with lies more easily, that is why people lie.

Educating Rita Essay examples -- Education Educating Rita Willy Russel

Educating Rita The play Educating Rita, only has two characters, Frank and Rita, Rita wants to learn literacy, and Frank is her tutor. The play is set in the 1970's, when there was not a lot of unemployment, and there was plenty of money. Although Rita has everything she needs, she is dis-satisfied with her life, she wants something more. Rita feels that there is no meaning to life, and she wants to find one. The characters Rita and Frank are two totally different people, Rita is uneducated and common, whereas Frank is educated and well spoken. I found the play has no specific genre, I found it came under realist, with the issues it covers like divorce, I found it came under comedy, because it made you laugh in places, and I thought it also came under drama. Frank has a serious drinking habit; we are first introduced to this at the beginning of the play, when Frank, "pulls out a pile of books to reveal a bottle of whisky." This shows the audience that he his trying to hide his habit because perhaps he feels it is wrong, or perhaps he doesn't want to get caught drinking at work. Rita's first reaction to this habit was "y' wanna be careful with that stuff, it kills y' brain cells." This shows the audience that she might be a person who jokes a lot, but if she says it in a serious way, then it shows that she doesn't really like drinking, or that she is concerned for Frank, in case he throws his life away. In the rest of the play Frank is nearly always drunk, he is always pouring himself a drink. In act 2 scene 5 Rita has read Franks poems, "are you sober? Are you?" This question suggests that Frank was drunk a lot and Rita wanted to speak to him when he wasn't. We discover the type of relat... ...Ritas. So there may be a lot of confusion between them in the future. When Rita and Frank have finished confusing each other over Ritas name, Rita notices an erotic painting on the wall, "its very erotic isn't it?" This shows Rita sees it in a different view than Frank because he doesn't/didn't see it as erotic. This might symbolise the fact that they are from different lifestyles, or that they may not always see things in the same perspective. Overall I think the first three pages introduce the audience quite well to the main themes, it introduces Frank as an obvious alcoholic and Rita as an uneducated woman. It shows they both have different views and may find it difficult to see each other's at times. After reading the play, I found it was a good laugh, it made me understand a bit more about the two different cultures and inspired me to learn.

The Impact of Local Television in Today’s Society

Local Television in Today's Society Since the early 1940's, it has been clearly evident that television has played a crucial role in the way people receive and perceive news media on a day to day basis. According to State of the News Media, viewership and ratings have drastically changed over the years and as of 2012, it is suggested that it is in large part due to the pressing and irreversible shift towards social media. Now our country not only relies on our friendly local newscasters to fill us in on the weather or breaking news irst thing in the morning, but also on the latest KRQE tweet on Twitter or status update on Facebook. Our world is turning digital and as hard as many may try to stop it, there is no denying that a future in news will rely heavily on the efficiency and effectiveness of social media. So where does this leave our local television stations and ultimately, how will this digital frenzy effect their overall viewership, ratings and longevity? This is the prominent concern in our local news media world today and a question that must be discussed and actively researched to ensure the future of local elevision news. Throughout the course of this semester, the students in this Media Management course have had the opportunity to pick the brains of various news anchors, producers, directors, and Journalists to question and investigate this shift from both print media and local television, to our growing reliance on internet and various social networking sites. Each of our guests was forced to explore the same question: In a time of slipping credibility and growing opinion, how do you succeed in the digital era while maintaining values and traditions of great Journalism that rought us here in the first place? With no surprise, each speaker responded with a similar statement. The gist being that as a society, we must, as a whole, focus on seeking the truth behind any story. We must provide valid, reliable and timely information that pertains and relat es to the lives of every member in our community and remain a trustworthy source of news for years to come.We must place precedence on social responsibility. Seems a lot easier said than done considering there has been a noticeable decline in local TV news viewership since 2007. And lthough there was a slight increase in 2011, the mostly steady decline has been cause for great concern in the news world. While reading the substantial amount of information that State of the News Media provided on this issue, it was apparent that network and local stations alike are predominantly losing viewers (or in some rare cases reaching a time of stabilization) in both primetime television spots as well as in nontraditional time slots. The research suggests that although there is the occasional increase in viewers during times of national or worldwide distress, there is indeed a uantitative measure proving simply a sta bilization ot local news audiences in specific time slots (no increase) versus the drastic decline that was evident beginning in 2007. However, this ‘improvement' was not substantial enough to propose that local TV news has entered a period of new audience growth. According to SNM, â€Å"viewership of network affiliates was up for newscasts in both the morning (5 to 7 a. m. ) and late evening (11 p. m. when averaged across all sweeps periods studied. In the early evening time slot (5 to 7 p. m. , viewership was down slightly. † Delving a little deeper into the sweeps periods offered a clue to at least one reason behind the improvement – there has been higher interest in the news (for example the coverage of the chaos, rebellion, and distress surrounding Egypt and Libya earlier in the year or the 2012 Presidential election. ) But breaking news or continuous coverage of a significant event may not always dominate the airwaves considering there are times when news is slow and not as easily accessible. At that point reporters must rely on heir o wn investigative skills and creative thinking to find their own stories to dissect and examine. These facts were reiterated by a large number of our guest speakers in class including Alex Tomlin, Bill Anderson, Doug Fernandez and Jessica Garrate. They all made it a clear point to discuss the importance of understanding the average news consumers' daily routine, the most critical time of day that any one individual can be reached and what it is that truly attracts a news consumer to a particular station. That is the indeed the key to success for any local station.Understand the consumer and their wants and needs, take initiative on finding imperative stories regarding our community, and consistently provide viewers with the most up to date and relevant news possible while maintaining a good reputation by being credible, reliable and original. In todays news world, this in many instances means Jumping on that social media bandwagon and making the decision to provide consumers with pla y by plays via the internet. â€Å"Almost every station in the country now has a Facebook page, according to the annual RTDNA/Hofstra survey, and almost 90% have t least one Twitter feed. (SNM, 2012) This move to digital news has proven to be in some cases effective, and in others somewhat irrelevant to the success of local stations (or newspapers) as mentioned by Bill Anderson, general manager of KRQE, and Dan Mayfield, Sr. writer for NM Business Weekly. However, although results of viewer increase due to social media is not definitive; it has great potential to become a positive influence for any news team because social media can encourage consumers to sample any station's newscast. And once that seed has been planted, it becomes the responsibility of the news team to deliver a quality show that maintains that viewers' interest. Alex Tomlin, news reporter and correspondent for KRQE, discussed in great detail the value of delivering hard and entertaining news, without focusing on the trend of social media. She mentioned briefly how a reliance on networking sites is viewed in the news world as a method of being lazy and therefore unreliable because it is difficult to attribute any fact to the alleged statements being made.

Functional or Dysfunctional Families Essays

Functional or Dysfunctional Families Essays Functional or Dysfunctional Families Essay Functional or Dysfunctional Families Essay What Is the first thing thats come Into your mind? Love? Hate? That there Is no such a thing as family? There Is no specific rule that says families should be a certain way. Every single family has problems. Therefore, there is no such thing as a completely functional family. Then, what really is a functional family? Does anybody really know? Or may be- are we Judging something based on a model that has been created by our society? For example: the perfect family Is where the wife stay home ND does her duties and the man of the house brings home the bacon. The perfect children are the ones who never flight; in a perfect family, the mother-in-law is a best friend with the wife. Not Just in the immediate family is there perfection, but also with the cousins, aunts and grandmothers: everybody gets along with everybody else, and nobody talks about anyone behind their backs. In the world there are different types of families, each with their own traditions, customs and values. Each one of them has their own particular ay of thinking. This doesnt necessarily mean this is a dysfunctional family. Actually it would be hard for us to identify what could be a dysfunctional family or not. It Is perfectly normal that females have disagreements and fights because we as humans are not perfect nor have the same way AT twinkling. I en Important thing Is Tort every memoir AT ten family to accept their mistakes and learn to respect each others opinions. : This reminds me of the movie Little Miss Sunshine where the familys elder son decides not speak a word for nine months, the uncle tries to take his own life because of a broken heart, the grandfather is a drug addict and the father does not accept Losers in the family. This is a perfect example of how each and every one of us has our own problems, opinions and ways of dealing with conflict. It shows that at the end no matter what their decisions is, the family should stay together and encourage each other paying no mind to their differences. We have learned that families are not perfect. We should not go by the tankard of functional or dysfunctional because the real issue is not about measuring up to a standard. Since all human beings are complicated, we are bound no to get along all the time. But we must work on doing so, not only in our family circle, but also with all humanity. Family is a very important part of life: what you have forever, even after disappointments, arguments or bog fights. Good families will overcome their emotions and try to help one another. Where this is impossible, friends become the family, but may never be quite the same.
